Understanding the PSLE Chinese Oral Format
The PSLE Chinese oral exam is worth 15% of the overall Chinese Language grade. It consists of three components:
- Reading Aloud (朗读) — Read a passage clearly and fluently
- Picture Description (看图说话) — Describe a picture and share observations
- Conversation (会话) — Answer the examiner's questions based on the picture topic
Reading Aloud Tips
Tip 1: Pronounce Each Character Clearly
Don't rush. Examiners are listening for accurate pronunciation, especially of commonly confused sounds like zh/z, ch/c, sh/s and tones. Practise with a parent or recording device.
Tip 2: Mind the Punctuation
Pause briefly at commas (,) and longer at full stops (。). Question marks (?) should have a rising intonation. Reading punctuation correctly shows comprehension, not just decoding.
Tip 3: Read with Expression
A flat, monotone reading scores lower even if pronunciation is perfect. Vary your tone to match the content — excitement for happy scenes, seriousness for problems described in the passage.
Tip 4: Practise Unfamiliar Words Daily
Use the P5–P6 textbook word lists. Read one passage aloud every evening. When your child encounters an unfamiliar character, look it up together using Hanyu Pinyin.
Picture Description Tips
Tip 5: Use the "5W1H" Framework
Train your child to cover Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How when describing the picture. For example: "In the picture, I see a group of students (who) cleaning up (what) a park (where) on a sunny Saturday morning (when)."
Tip 6: Go Beyond the Obvious
Weaker students only describe what they see. Stronger students infer and elaborate. If the picture shows a boy helping an elderly person cross the road, don't just state that — talk about why it's important and how it reflects good values.
Tip 7: Prepare Vocabulary for Common Themes
PSLE oral pictures often revolve around these themes:
- Kampung spirit / community help (互助精神)
- Environmental protection (环保)
- Family bonding (家庭活动)
- School activities (学校生活)
- Healthy living (健康生活)
Conversation Tips
Tip 8: Answer in Full Sentences, Then Elaborate
Never give one-word answers. If the examiner asks "你觉得帮助别人重要吗?" (Do you think helping others is important?), don't just say "重要" (important). Say: "我觉得帮助别人非常重要,因为..." and give a reason with a personal example.
Tip 9: Use Personal Experiences
Examiners love hearing real stories. Prepare a few go-to anecdotes:
- A time you helped someone
- A family outing or tradition (visiting grandparents during CNY, for example)
- A school event you participated in
- A habit you're proud of (reading, exercising, recycling)
Tip 10: Stay Calm and Ask for Clarification
If your child doesn't understand a question, it's perfectly acceptable to say: "老师,请您再说一次好吗?" (Teacher, could you repeat that please?). This is far better than guessing or staying silent.
A Daily Practice Routine
Dedicate just 10 minutes a day to oral practice:
- Monday–Wednesday: Read one textbook passage aloud, record and playback
- Thursday–Friday: Describe a picture (use past-year PSLE papers or newspaper images)
- Weekend: Hold a mock conversation with a parent — ask 3–4 questions based on a theme
